I Savoia come The Crown, al via la produzione della serie tv su Maria Giovanna Battista

Dopo il grande successo internazionale della serie The Crown, ispirata agli ultimi 70 anni della Royal Family del Regno Unito, l’Italia e la Francia uniranno gli sforzi produttivi per una serie tv sulla Famiglia Reale Italiana: Madama Reale. La serie sui Savoia partirà dal 1675 e seguirà le vicende di Marie-Jeanne de Nemours, nata orfana, che si ritroverà a sfidare Luigi XIV seguendo le proprie regole e sfidando apertamente gli uomini del mondo

Dopo il grande successo internazionale della serie The Crown, ispirata agli ultimi 70 anni della Royal Family del Regno Unito, l'Italia e la Francia uniranno gli sforzi produttivi per una serie tv sulla Famiglia Reale Italiana: Madama Reale. Questo è il titolo della serie che arriverà nel 2022 e che è stato il frutto di un contest, lanciato nell'autunno 2017 da Film Commission Torino Piemonte, FIP Film Investimenti Piemonte e Regione Piemonte, che si è rivolto agli sceneggiatori di tutta Europa al fine di selezionare il concept migliore per una serie tv ambientata nell'epoca della dinastia Savoia. Al progetto si è unita anche la Lume Torino e la casa francese Le Films d'Ici. La serie è scritta da Laura Piani (Philarmonia, Ronde de nuit) e Tara Mulholland, scrittrice ed editor freelance.

La trama della serie
Palazzo Madama, ma anche Parigi, il fulcro di questa nuova serie tv che sarà lanciata nel 2022 e che dovrebbe partire da Marie-Jeanne de Nemours, nata orfana, che si ritroverà a diventare Reggente di Savoia e Madama Reale nel 1675. Sarà un decennio incredibilmente turbolento nel quale una donna vive secondo le proprie regole, sfidando Luigi XIV nel tentativo di rafforzare il ruolo internazionale della Savoia, ostentando con disinvoltura i suoi giovani amanti, vendicandosi allegramente delle amanti del defunto marito e facendo tutto ciò che è in suo potere per trasformare Torino in “una nuova Atene” della conoscenza e della cultura. Il progetto originale prevedeva sei episodi da 52 minuti, ma sembrerebbe che la produzione abbia dato l'ok per altri due episodi, per un totale di otto.

Sono palpabili le differenze con The Crown già dal periodo storico. La serie sui Savoia partirà due secoli prima rispetto all'era contemporanea che vediamo nella popolare serie Netflix. Differenza importante anche di budget, molto minore rispetto alla produzione Netflix. Tuttavia, la produzione italo-francese sembrerebbe essere altrettanto intrigante. Il curatore del Contest Piero Bodrato ha spiegato:

La serie tv “Madama Reale” ha convinto per la capacità di unire la grande epica storica e televisiva con temi e linguaggi di grande attualità. La vita di Maria Giovanna di Nemours viene raccontata nella cornice di una serie di lettere tra una madre e una nipote, che sviluppano apertamente il difficile rapporto tra genere, potere e sentimenti privati; un tema centrale per comprendere l’originalità delle figure storiche delle Madame Reali e che al tempo stesso risuona con sempre maggiore importanza nel mondo contemporaneo

Starz has set Catherine de Medici’s (Samantha Morton) royal court. Amrita Acharia (Game of Thrones), Enzo Cilenti (Free Fire), Barry Atsma (The Hitman’s Bodyguard), Nicholas Burns (Emma) and Danny Kirrane (Pirates of the Caribbean) join Morton as series regulars in The Serpent Queen original series, from Lionsgate Television and 3 Arts Entertainment. Charles Dance (Game of Thrones), Ludivine Sagnier (8 Women), Liv Hill (Three Girls), Kiruna Stamell (The New Pope) and Colm Meaney (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) have been cast in recurring roles in the 16th Century drama.

Considered an immigrant, common and plain, Morton’s Catherine de Medici is married into the 16th century French court as an orphaned teenager expected to bring a fortune in dowry and produce many heirs, only to discover that her husband is in love with an older woman, her dowry is unpaid and she’s unable to conceive. Yet, only with her intelligence and determination, she manages to keep her marriage alive and masters the bloodsport that is the monarchy better than anyone else, ruling France for 50 years.

Acharia plays Aabis. A member of Catherine’s retinue… Aabis is Muslim, a Moor by birth, but procured and converted by Pope Clement to Christianity after war with Suleiman the Ottoman Emperor. Everything that Catherine is not, with a beauty that regularly invokes the desire of powerful men, she is at first grateful to be rescued by Catherine from the predation of Pope Clement. Once in the Valois court, however, Aabis earns Catherine’s envy and realizes too late she may have entered into a Faustian bargain of her own.

Cilenti is Ruggieri. When Catherine meets the magician and soothsayer, he is peddling his talents on the streets of Florence, alongside peasants and grifters. She invites him to join her retinue with no thoughts to the man’s own agenda or crimes. After he joins her in the French court by becoming her personal guide to the black arts, he changes his life and hers, forever.

Atsma is Montmorency. In a royal court where nobody thinks of anything but their own survival and status, Montmorency has the dubious distinction of actually caring about the greater good of the society he serves as its foremost military leader. Concepts like fairness, equality and justice mean something to this man. Consequently, he is almost always a step behind the other members of court, who find him either a bore or a hindrance to their scheming. When Montmorency converts to Protestantism it is that rare thing: genuine. Montmorency’s goodness and wisdom finally win him the trust and faith of King Charles IX, Catherine’s second son. Unfortunately, his guidance of the young monarch puts him directly in Catherine’s cross hairs – provoking her rage, hatred and ultimately, deadly vengeance

Burns portrays Antoine de Bourbon. The eldest of the Bourbon brothers, Antoine, was married to Jeanne D’Albret, the daughter of Marguerite, Queen of Navarre and King Francis’s sister. In this way his father hopes the Bourbons will move closer to the Valois. But Antoine is lazy and a sensualist, much more motivated by his own comforts and titillations than any power plays.

Kirrane is Louis de Bourbon, the stronger willed and more intelligent Bourbon brother. He is not as easy for the Valois to manipulate and ridiculebut he is not as intelligent as he thinks himself to be.

Dance recurs as Pope Clement; Sagnier as Diane; Hill as Young Catherine; Stamell as Mathilde and Meaney as “King Francis.
